Fan attacks goalkeeper with corner flag during Turkish second division match

A fan attacked a goalkeeper with a corner flag during Sunday’s derby clash between Goztepe and Altay in the Turkish second division.

Goztepe and Altay are longstanding rivals from the western city of Izmir.

Play at the Gursel Aksel Stadium was stopped in the 19th minute to allow ambulances entered the pitch to take away Goztepe fans that were injured by a thrown flare.

A number of players, including Altay goalkeeper Ozan Evrim Ozenc, stood around the ambulances as those injured were being treated.

At which point a Goztepe fan ran on to the pitch, grabbed a corner flag and used it to attack Ozenc.

The keeper was hit twice by the fan, who broke the corner flag into pieces with his second blow.

The supporter was then jumped on by police and taken away.

The goalkeeper was taken to hospital for treatment after suffering a head injury.

After a delay of around 25 minutes, with both teams sent back to the changing rooms, the referee called the game off.

Emergency medical personnel transport an injured Goztepe fan to an ambulance.
