Friday’s German Cup tie between Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern was halted as fans threw flares and invaded the pitch.
Trouble erupted after a goalless 90 minutes following a brief confrontation between the players.
Flares were thrown from the Kaiserslautern end into the home stands, prompting Waldhof fans to storm the pitch. Riot police quickly moved in as the players sprinted down the tunnel.
The pitch invaders were forced back into the stands, where they then clashed with police.
The match was suspended for around 30 minutes before eventually restarting, with Kaiserslautern going on to win 1-0 in extra time.
Around 85 people required medical treatment, including 35 police officers, while eight were taken to hospital.
Several arrests were made.
